How to connect your GMX account

Having trouble connecting your GMX account to Leave Me Alone? You're not alone, and it's usually a quick fix. This guide covers GMX accounts on gmx.com, gmx.net, and gmx.de.

There are two things GMX needs before we can connect:

1. IMAP access turned on in your GMX settings
2. An app password if you use two-factor authentication (2FA)

Step 1: Turn on IMAP access

GMX switches IMAP off by default on many accounts. If it's off, we can't reach your inbox and you'll see a connection error.

1. Log in to your GMX account in a web browser.
2. Open E-Mail Settings.
3. Select POP3 & IMAP.
4. Tick Allow access via POP3 and IMAP.
5. Click Save.

On German-language accounts, look for Einstellungen > POP3 & IMAP > POP3 und IMAP Abruf erlauben.

Step 2: Create an app password (if you use 2FA)

If you've turned on two-factor authentication, your normal GMX password won't work with us. You'll need an app password instead. It's a separate password that only works for the app you create it for, so your main password stays private.

1. Log in to your GMX account.
2. Go to Security (Sicherheit).
3. Find Application-specific passwords (Anwendungsspezifische Passwörter).
4. Create a new password and give it a name like "Leave Me Alone".
5. Copy the password GMX shows you. You won't be able to see it again.

Step 3: Connect to Leave Me Alone

1. In Leave Me Alone, choose to connect a new account.
2. Enter your full GMX email address.
3. Paste your app password (or your normal GMX password if you don't use 2FA).
4. Click Connect.

If we ask for server details, use these:

Still getting a connection error?

Try these in order:

• Double-check IMAP is on. It's the most common cause, even if you're sure you've turned it on before. Save the setting again and wait a few minutes.
• Create an app password anyway. Even without 2FA, an app password sometimes connects when your normal password doesn't.
• Check your password for typos. Copy and paste the app password rather than typing it.
• Look for a security alert from GMX. GMX sometimes blocks new logins until you confirm it was you. Check your GMX inbox for a message about it.
