Can I unsubscribe from spam emails?

In general we recommend not unsubscribing from emails in your spam folder, and by default Leave Me Alone won't process unsubscribe requests for emails that have been classified as spam.

Here's why.

The difference between spam and unwanted email

Not all unwanted email is spam. There's an important distinction:

• Marketing email / newsletters: you signed up for these (or were added to a list as a result of a purchase or sign-up). The sender is a legitimate business, and their unsubscribe links work as expected.
• Spam: unsolicited email from senders you have no relationship with, often sent in bulk by bad actors.

The Leave Me Alone Unsubscriber is designed to help you clean up the first category. Your spam folder is a different problem entirely.

Why unsubscribing from spam can make things worse

When you click an unsubscribe link in a spam email, you're not opting out - you're confirming to the spammer that your email address is real and actively monitored.

Unfortunately this can:

• Increase the amount of spam you receive. Spammers often test email addresses in bulk. Confirming yours is active makes it more valuable and more likely to be targeted further.
• Expose you to phishing. Spam unsubscribe links frequently lead to malicious websites designed to steal credentials, install malware, or harvest more personal data.
• Sell your address on. Verified addresses are traded and sold between spammers. Clicking anything signals that your address is worth more.

What you should do instead

The best way to deal with spam is to let your email provider's spam filter do their job:

1. Leave spam in your spam folder. Most email providers automatically delete spam after 30 days.
2. Mark messages as spam if they're landing in your inbox instead. This trains your provider's filters and helps protect others.
3. Block the sender if a specific address keeps getting through (you can do this within Leave Me Alone using the "Custom blocklist" feature.
4. Never click links in spam emails. Including unsubscribe, "view in browser", or any other link.

Want to unsubscribe from spam anyway?

You can override our default settings and show emails from spammers in Leave Me Alone by checking this box "Seach spam & trash" from the dropdown menu on the Unsubscriber page.

Again, we don't recommended this option as it could result in you receiving more mailing lists, but it's your decision to make.

What Leave Me Alone does

When you connect your inbox, Leave Me Alone scans your email for subscriptions and mailing lists, these are senders you have a legitimate relationship with. We intentionally exclude emails that have been marked or classified as spam, so you won't see them in your unsubscribe list.
