How can we help?

What happens after I click "Unsubscribe"?

Find out exactly what happens and how we remove you from a mailing list when you click unsubscribe on an email in Leave Me Alone

The unsubscribe process

Notion image

After you click the "Unsubscribe" button in the subscriptions list, then the magic starts!

We will try several steps to try and unsubscribe you from emails:

  1. We check the details of the email to find the unsubscribe link, this either comes from the headers (metadata) of the email, or if that doesn't work we scrape through the content of the email to find it.
  1. If the link is simple, then we fire off an unsubscribe request to it (this is called an "Unsubscribe-Post")
  1. If the link is more complicated then we visit the link on your behalf and automatically follow any instructions (such as clicking buttons and selecting checkboxes) using our advanced "UnsubscriberAI" and custom algorithms.
  1. If we can determine from the above that the unsubscribe was a success then we mark it completed.
  1. If not then we may also send an email to the sender asking them to remove you from their mailing list.

After unsubscribing

Once the unsubscribe is finished we can perform a few more actions to help get your inbox under control:

Moving unsubscribed emails to a folder

We can move all the emails that you unsubscribe from to a folder you specify. By default we will move them to a folder called "Unsubscribed mailing lists".

Deleting unsubscribed emails

We never delete any emails from your mailbox, we find everything a bit safer that way. But if you want to clean up the emails we've unsubscribed from then you can delete the "Unsubscribed mailing lists" folder at any time. This wont affect any of unsubscribe requests that we've already made, you will stay unsubscribed from them!

Creating Filters

In some cases even though we've unsubscribed successfully from a sender, they will continue to email you. This could be due to a false-positive on our side, or simply because the sender is being naughty.

To help with this in Gmail (and Outlook coming soon), we will create a filter that automatically moves any new emails that arrive from these senders to your unsubscribed folder, and we'll mark them as read so you don't get notified.

Using Inbox Shield to block unsubscribed senders

If you want to make sure emails from unsubscribed senders are blocked forever then you can enable our Inbox Shield feature. Shield will automatically block all emails that you've unsubscribed from without needing to create filters.
